Working With The Government

In order to work with the government you must know what the rules are. Here you will find what you need to know to comply with the various regulations the government sets on awarding small business contracts.

The size of your business does not really matter. Any size of business can be awarded a contract as long as it is responsible, competitive, patient with the bureaucratic process, and willing to put forth resources to market to the government.

Is your business financially healthy? The financial health of your business is very important to government contracting. If your business is short on cash flow or has a hard time making payroll, then a government contract is probably not what you want. A government contract will not likely save your business from bankruptcy. More often than not, such a contract can actually make your business worse off than it was before.

Does your business assure quality of its products? Most government contracts are only awarded to those businesses that have a quality assurance plan in place. This ensures that your product or service will be useful and is up to the industry standards. If you do not have such a program, get one or learn how your product can get up to speed with current government or industry standards.

Does your business operate in an organized manner? The government requires that your operations are efficient. This means that you must conduct proper reporting and documentation. This also means that you have the ability to keep your business up and running. No contract will be awarded to businesses that have to periodically shut down because of the loss of a few documents. The government may need your services at a moments notice so it is vital that you can keep your operations running.

Is your business EDI-capable? The government has moved to an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to award contracts. What this means is that you must have the necessary technology to be awarded a contract. These requirements are listed below.

  • A personal computer with enough power capabilities to efficiently run your business.
  • A modem with a speed of at least 56K.
  • A dedicated phone line for your business.
  • A reliable internet connection.

Do you know how to use the internet? If you are on this website then you have some idea of how to use the internet. However browsing is not the only skill that you need to have to optimize the internet’s capability. You must also have a valid understanding of email, uploading and downloading information, and use of search engines. If you feel you need more training on using the internet, NBDC does offer enrichment courses in many fields of computer technology, including the internet
