The SBA is offering an excellent free online course in business plan development. A business plan is something that all successful businesses have, and having one for your small business is greatly important. Business plans set you in the right direction, especially if your business is in its opening stages. Established businesses are no exception, however. Planning lets you know where you have been along with where you want to go. And this online course will set you in the right direction.
The “Developing a Successful Business Plan” course has several useful features. First, it is narrated by Tim Berry, an international expert on business planning. Mr. Berry holds an MBA from Stanford University and is the founder and president of Palo Alto Software. Secondly, the presentation is easily navigated and very user friendly. Users can easily pause the presentation to take notes, or jump to any page by clicking on the related topic on the side menu bar. Persons not able to view the presentation in its entirety will be able to pick up where they left off instead of completely starting over. Finally the course offers additional resources on the top right navigation bar. Among these resources are the sample business plans. Here visitors can review many business plans to compare them to the course material presented by Mr. Barry. This feature is a great resource for full comprehension of the course material.
Likely the most important concept in the course is that of “strategy”. Business Strategy is an area where many businesses go wrong so it is important to really focus when Mr. Berry discusses this concept. Moreover, it is useful to implement the sample plans here too. See if you can find the overarching strategies in each business. Whether it is to increase market share or grow the business by some percentage, you will find that vision, mission, keys to success, and financials all center on what the business’s main objectives are.
Whether you are just starting a business or have been established for years, planning is something you have to do. This course will either let you know what you need to do to get started or give you valuable insight on how you can improve your current planning. This online course is short and easy to follow. But it provides very valuable, step by step information on setting the right plan for your business.
